Wave management is the skill that separates players who win lane on paper from players who turn that lead into towers, dragons and wins. Every recall, roam and objective fight depends on where the minion waves are. If you control the waves, you control when the action happens — and you can stop the enemy from doing what they want.
This guide explains the four wave states you need to know, when to use each, and how to apply them from the first minute of laning to the last side wave of the game.
How Minion Waves Work
Minion waves spawn on a fixed timer from both bases and meet in the middle of each lane. Each wave has melee and caster minions, and cannon minions join every few waves — more often as the game goes on. Minions attack whatever is in front of them, so the side with more minions slowly pushes the fight toward the other side's tower.
That's the whole idea behind wave management: by choosing which minions you kill and when, you decide which way the wave moves, how big it gets and where it ends up.
The Four Wave States
Slow Push
What it is: you last-hit only and leave the enemy wave a little smaller than yours, so your wave builds up over two or three waves into a large stack.
Use it when: you want to crash a big wave into the enemy tower before a recall, a dive, a roam or a dragon fight. A big slow-pushed wave does lots of damage to the tower and the enemy loses minions if they leave to follow you.
How: kill the enemy caster minions first (they die fastest and do the most damage), then only last-hit. Don't use abilities on the wave.
Fast Push
What it is: you clear the enemy wave as quickly as possible with abilities and auto-attacks.
Use it when: you need the wave at the enemy tower right now — to recall without losing farm, to move to an objective first, or to help your jungler in a fight that's about to start.
The catch: a fast push leaves you further from your own tower. Don't do it if the enemy jungler could be nearby and you have no ward.
Freeze
What it is: you hold the wave just outside your own tower range by only last-hitting, so it never pushes away from you.
Use it when: you're ahead and want to deny the enemy farm and experience, or you're behind and want to farm safely near your tower. The enemy has to walk up to you to farm — which puts them in range of your jungler.
How: a freeze holds when the enemy wave is a few minions larger than yours. If your wave gets too big, tank a few minions or let some die before you last-hit them, so it doesn't push forward.
Crash and Bounce
What it is: your wave reaches the enemy tower and the tower kills it. The next waves then push back toward you on their own — the "bounce".
Use it when: you're about to recall or roam. Crash the wave, leave, and the bounce brings the next waves back toward your side, so you lose little or no farm while you're away.
How to Recall Without Losing Farm
The most useful habit in the whole guide: push the wave into the enemy tower before you recall. If you recall with the wave in the middle, the enemy pushes it into your tower and you lose minions to it while you shop. If you crash first, the enemy has to farm under their tower while you're away, and the wave returns to you by the time you walk back.
A strong version of this is the "cheater recall": slow push two waves, crash the big wave into the tower, and recall immediately. You return with items while the enemy is still dealing with the minions under their tower.
What to Do With the Wave in Each Situation
You Won a Trade or a Kill
Push the wave quickly and take a tower plate or recall. While the enemy is dead or low, every minion that reaches their tower is free damage. Plates fall off at 14:00, so early leads are worth the most when you turn them into plates.
The Enemy Jungler Was Just Seen on the Other Side
This is your window. Push freely, take plates or roam to the side of the map where the jungler isn't.
You're Behind
Let the wave come to you and farm under or near your tower. Don't contest a push you can't win; catch the wave where it's safe and wait for help or for your item spike.
An Objective Is About to Spawn
Push your wave first — around 30–60 seconds before the objective — so the enemy laner has to stay and catch minions while you move. The team that arrives first gets to ward the area and choose the fight.
Waves in the Mid and Late Game
After laning, waves keep coming even when nobody is there. That makes side lanes a resource:
- Never leave a big wave crashing into your own tower without a reason. It costs gold and can take the tower.
- Before a Baron or Elder fight, push the side waves toward the enemy base. The enemy has to choose between defending their towers and contesting the objective.
- Catch side waves with vision. In the late game, death timers are long — dying while farming a side wave alone can lose the game.
- After a won teamfight, push the waves into the enemy base while they respawn. Minions do real damage to inhibitors when you're not there.
Common Wave Management Mistakes
Pushing with no vision: fast-pushing to the enemy tower while the enemy jungler is unaccounted for. Ward first, or push only when you know where the jungler is.
Breaking your own freeze: using abilities on the wave because you got bored. One stray ability can turn a freeze into a push you can't stop.
Roaming with the wave on your side: leaving to gank mid while the enemy wave is about to crash your tower. You lose more gold than the roam gains.
Ignoring cannon waves: cannon minions take many hits from the tower. Recall timing that leaves a cannon behind is often a few CS and a tower plate lost.
Practise it in one place: in your next five games, focus only on one thing — crash the wave before every recall. It's the simplest wave habit with the biggest payoff, and it forces you to think about the wave every time you leave lane.
